Black Disc; - E.J. Smith «The Golden Age of Opera EJS 344 {2LPS} (1965)ª; E.J. Smith «Richard Strauss» SP 2 {2LPS}; Melodram MEL 113 {3LPS}
ª(year of issue or re-issue)
Recordings of Intermezzo by Richard Strauss are surveyed in the following publications:-
CELLETTI p.788; L'Avant Scène Opéra No.138 p.110; GIUDICI p.843
Comments:- Recording of a performance by the Wiener Staatsoper in the Theater an der Wien (probably 27 April 1963). According to «More EJS» (p.562, p.598) the recording is of a performance at the Munich Festival on 14 August 1960, However, that this is really a recording of a performance in Vienna as indicated by Melodram is supported by the reported presence in some of the minor roles of Viennese regulars like Alfred Poell, Waldemar Kmentt, Oskar Czerwenka, Ludwig Welter. Also according to OPERA August 1962 p.568 there was going to be a new production by Rudolf Hartmann in the Theater an der Wien with Hanny Steffek and Hermann Prey, conducted by Joseph Keilberth in the 1962-63 season and that this took place is confirmed by the report in OPERA September 1963 p.632. Further details are given in «Karajan an der Wiener Oper - Dokumentation einer Åra» (Japanese edition p.163) and «Chronik der Wiener Staatsoper 1945-1995» p.126. A performance at the Munich festival is reviewed in OPERA Festival Issue 1960 pp.58-59 and it reports quite different singers for some of the minor roles than those listed above. A video of a performance in 1963 in Munich with a slightly different cast from that of 1960 (see OPERA loc. cit.) is listed separately. The Melodram LPs are advertized in GRAMOPHONE June 1984 p.91. See also the article in L'Avant Scène Opéra No.138 p.110
