Recordings of Les Troyens by Hector Berlioz are surveyed in the following publications:-
HARRIS p.302; Opera on Record p.158; CELLETTI p.90; Opera on CD (1) p.41 (2) p.47 (3) p.52; L'Avant Scène Opéra No.128-129 p.160; MET p.41; MET(VID) p.14; PENGUIN p.21; GIUDICI p.55 (2) p.95; Opéra International No.276 février 2003 p.18; Orpheus Heft 3+4 März+April 2003 S.66; The Opera Quarterly Vol.19 No.3 Summer 2003 pp.446-485; American Record Guide Vol.70 No.3 pp.64-65
Comments:- This appears to be a recording of the performance in the Royal Opera House on 10 May 1960 (i.e. 10/5/60 European style) which was broadcast (see Radio Times Issue dated May 8-14 1960 p.41). The performance on 29 April 1960 is reviewed in OPERA June 1960 pp.446-447. The recording issued by the Omega Opera Archive is listed in their online catalogue (hyperlink in CLORLINK.HTM) where it stated that their recordings are available «on CD, cassette or reel-to-reel tape». Here the recording is described as being of «Trojans at Carthage». But the indicated length «4 hours» and the presence of Shuard in the cast list strongly suggests that it is of the complete opera. The date is given incorrectly as «Oct.5.1960» (i.e. 10/5/60 Americam style).

Comments:- Recording of a performance at Teatro Colón, Buenos Aires (30 June 1968 or/and 21 June 1968 (M. Richter); see OPERA, September 1968 p.719). The conductor is stated to be Juan Emilio Martini in the description of this recording given with the two CD set issued by VAI (1197), but Memoria Sonora del Teatro Colón gives Bartoletti. Both Bartoletti and Martini are given on the Teatro Colón website, but it is not stated which performances each of them conducted (click link below). It is possible that the recordings issued on the different labels are of different performances.

Comments:- Recording of a perfomance in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. This is probably of the performance on 6 November 1958 which was broadcast by the BBC Third Programme (see Radio Times Issue dated November 2-8 1958 p.43). The performance on 31 October 1958 is reviewed in OPERA December 1958 pp.809-812. The recording issued by the Omega Opera Archive is listed in their online catalogue (see CLORLINK.HTM) where it stated that their recordings are available «on CD, cassette or reel-to-reel tape». Here the date of the performance broadcast is given as «Nov, 7 1958», but Boris Godunov was not performed at Covent Garden on that date. The CDRs issued by «Live Opera Heaven» are listed in their «JANUARY 2008 ALERT». The date of the performance recorded is also given here (incorrectly) as «11/7/58».

Comments:- Recording(s) made at performances in the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (February 1962; see OPERA April 1962 p.278). None of the performances were broadcast so, presumably, the recording(s) was(were) made «in-house». The cassettes issued by Charles Handelman are listed in his catalogue dated November 2000 and the CDs issued by Live Opera Heaven are listed in their «February 2003 Update» and the recording issued on «A Voice from the Old House» label is listed on the website http://www.joancarlyle.co.uk (hyperlink in CLORLINK.HTM). The recording issued on the Royal Opera House «Heritage Series» label is claimed to be of the performance on 23 February 1963, but as pointed out by Tully Potter in his review in CRC (loc.cit.) this cannot be correct as Amy Shuard did not complete this performance. He suggests that the recording «certainly derives partially from 27 February and possibly partially from 2 March.» The end of Act 2 (about a minute) is missing from this recording and «a further passage of more than four minutes ...is lost from from Act 3 Scene 1»
