This recording is reviewed in the following publication:-
Gramophone Record Review - January 1957 p.209
------------------------------------------------------------------
American Record Guide - December 1957 Vol.24 No.4 p.170 [PLM]
------------------------------------------------------------------
Comments:- The year in which this recording was made is given as 1959 in an excelent article on the zarzuela on the internet (click link below), but this cannot be correct as it was reviewed in the two magazines listed above in 1957 and is included in the discography which accompanies a printed interview with the conductor Indalacio Cisneros, director of the Orquesta de Radio Madrid, which appeared in the Spanish Magazine DISCOFILIA julio-agosto 1956 pp.181-182. There is also a review of the recording on p.212 of the same issue. According to this discography Cisneros had by that time already conducted the recordings of 5 zarzuelas for Columbia/Alhambra El año pasado por agua (MC 25020), La Calesera (MCC 30033), Las Leandras (MC 25022), La Monteria (MCC 30035), El ultimo romantico (MCC 30034). Therefore Ataúlfo Argenta was not the only conductor of the zarzuela recordings issued by Columbia/Alhambra prior to his death.

Comments:- The CDs issued by Bella Voce are claimed to be of a recording of the performance at the MET on 6 January 1969. If this is correct the recording must be an «in-house» one as this performance was not broadcast. However, according to Calvin M. Goodwin (OPERA-L-Thu 22 Aug 2002 09:13:07 EDT) the recording is not of a performance at the MET at all, but «appears to be a San Francisco broadcast from 1974 (18 October) with Renata Scotto, José Carreras, Judith Forst and Julian Patrick». Recordings of this performance are listed separately. The highlights included as a «fller» with the recording of La fanciulla del west» issued by Bella Voce are however, according to Goodwin, from the performance at the MET (OPERA-L-Wed 18 Sep 2002 21:11:54 EDT)
