Comments:- The cassette with excerpts of a performance by the BBC with the cast members given as «Konetzni, Wettergren, Lorenz» and the year given as 1942! is listed in Charles Handelman's Live Opera Catalogue dated November 2000 p.75. As none of these singers were in England in 1942 it seems most likely that the recording is of one of the studio performances conducted by Thomas Beecham on 18 and 20 December 1946 which were broadcast by the BBC Third Programme. See Radio Times Issue dated December 13 1946 p.20, p.28. The recording issued by the Omega Opera Archive is listed in their online catalogue (see CLORLINK.HTM) where it stated that their recordings are available «on CD, cassette or reel-to-reel tape». The dates of the performances are given correctly here, but Archipel gives the year (incorrectly) as 1947. There is a review by Dyneley Hussey in The Listener Issue dated 26 December 1946 pp.947-948 .

Comments:- Recording of a performance broadcast by the BBC Third Programme (October 1947). According to «More EJS» portions of the recording of the finale on the Rococo LPs were taken from the commercial recording conducted by Beecham. Two performances were broadcast, on 24 and 26 October 1947. See Radio Times Issue dated October 19-25 1947 p.24 and that dated Oct.26-Nov. 1 1947 p.4. According to the review by James Miller in FANFARE the recording on the CDs issued by Opera d'Oro (OPD 1431) is not of the performance conducted by Beecham but of that conducted by Miropoulos (Salzburg 1957) that has also been issued by Opera d'Oro (OPD 1190).

Comments:- Neither Walhall nor Mike Richter provide information about the origin of the audio recording except the years 1947 and 1951. It is therefore a composite recording, but which parts were recorded in which year is not stated. It seems in fact that it is a recording of the soundtrack of the German version of Powell's and Pressburger's film. According to the online discography of Offenbach's stage works (hyperlink in CHLORLINK.HTM) «Rudolf Schock schrieb in seinen Memoiren, Josef Metternich und er seien nach täglich acht Stunden Synchronarbeit 'wie Betrunkene aus dem Studio gewankt'». See also the letter by Stefan Johansson in Classic Record Collector Spring 2005 p.4. Mr. Johansson also casts doubt on whether the conductor is Beecham. A DVD of the German version of the film has been issued by Premier and is listed above. See «New Releases from Premiere Opera - Tue. 16 May 2006».

Comments:- Recorded between 16 March and 6 April 1956. Some parts of this recording were made with one or more singers recorded over previously recorded contributions from the orchestra and the other singers (e.g.Merrill's contribution to the opening «Questo mar rosso» was recorded after that of the other singers). More details can be found in «Complete Operas on 78 R.P.M.» by Tom Peel. According toPeel the RCA Chorus was the Chorus of the New York City Opera.
