Comments:- Recording of a performance by the Vienna State Opera during a visit to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. According to Radio Times Fidelio was broadcast twice on 19 and 24 September 1947 (see Radio Times, Issue dated September 12 1947 p.24, Issue dated September 19 1947 p.20) and this recording appears to be of the performance on 24 September. According to the Times (September 25 1947 p.6) Hans Hotter was to have sung Pizzaro, but was ill, and was replaced by Paul Schöffler. The opera was performed using sets designed by Rex Whistler for Covent Garden . The CDs issued by the Istituto Discografico Italiano are incorrectly described as being a recording of a performance by the Covent Garden Company.
